THE BANKING SECTOR IN ALBANIA, THE GREEK PRESENCE 2016

As indicated in a 2016 study of the Greek Liaison Offices of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Greek embassy in Tirana, the banking sector in Albania has dealt with a number of challenges, due to the financial conjuncture within the EU and due to the existing uncertainty, the reduced domestic demand and the various changes that have occurred within the international regulatory framework. The deceleration credit growth broadly presents, recorded since 2013, reflects not only the efforts citizens make to reduce expenditure and the hesitation businesses show towards investments, but also the general banks’ reluctance, as a result of the high percentages non-performing loans demonstrate (NPLs). 

According to figures compiled by the Albanian Association of Banks (AAB, www.aab.al) all banks having interests in Greece (Alpha Bank, NBG Bank και Tirana Bank/Piraeus Bank) and operating in Albania, presented in 2015 a percentage of 14,14% as regards the assets’ total value within the Albanian bank market (1,38 bil. € out of a total amount of 9,77 bil. €) and a percentage of the range of 13,16% considering the total value of bank deposits, however in relation to higher percentages presented within the previous years (2014: 16,97% and 16,36, 2013: 17,98% and 17,48%, respectively). Banks serving greek interests, also owned in 2015 a percentage of 20,42%, viz 106, out of a total amount of 519 of the bank branches which operate in the country and employ a percentage of 16,57%, viz 1.142 employees of the human resources subject to the bank sector in Albania.
